Harkin Announces More Than $680,000 for Iowa Public Transportation

 

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Transit Administration has awarded a total of $681,800 to the cities of Ames, Clinton, Des Moines, and Dubuque for improvements to transit maintenance garages. Harkin is a senior member of the Appropriations subcommittee that funds transportation initiatives.
 
“Transportation is fundamental to the growth of Iowa’s economy and a strong, reliable transportation system is one of the keys to creating new jobs and businesses,” said Harkin. “These funds will improve facility efficiency and the safety and security of maintenance facilities for employees and riders.”
 
Improvements to transit maintenance garages include replacing boilers, lighter and heating units, surveillance systems and deteriorating concrete and locker/restrooms renovations.
 
The funds are allocated as follows:
 
Ames: $433,800
Clinton: $23,000
Des Moines: $200,000
Dubuque: $25,000 – including $5,000 for the Dubuque area rural system
