Harkin Announces $750,000 for Coralville Intermodal Transportation Center

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that the City of Coralville received $750,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation to construct a portion of the Intermodal Transportation Facility. This funding is the last in a series of grants that was made available through congressional funding pushed by Senator Harkin in the Appropriations process. Harkin has been a longtime supporter of this project and is a senior member of the Senate panel that funds transportation initiatives.

“Transportation is fundamental to the growth of Iowa’s economy and a strong, reliable transportation system is one of the keys to creating new jobs and businesses,” said Harkin. “This funding puts the project one step closer to completion and improves alternative transportation options in the Coralville/Iowa City area.”

The funding will be used to construct Phase I of the Intermodal Transportation Center. The Phase I facility will accommodate 270 Park and Ride commuter parking spaces, and will include bike lockers, bike racks, a canopied bus loading zone for three buses, and other amenities.  It will serve both Coralville river landing area and the University of Iowa hospitals.
