Harkin Announces more than $600,000 for Clinton Fire Department
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that the Clinton Fire Department will receive $664,536 to assist in recruiting volunteer firefighters. The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, administered through the Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration. The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program - Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) is designed to enhance the recipient’s ability to maintain 24 hour staffing and to ensure that the community has adequate protection during fire related emergencies. Harkin is a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and was a cosponsor of the legislation that authorized these programs.
“It is important that we do all we can to help keep Iowans safe and ensure that our firefighters have adequate resources,” said Harkin. “This funding will allow the Clinton area to recruit additional personnel for emergency situations, train current first responders, and purchase equipment to better assist Iowans when they need help the most.”
