Harkin Urges USDA to Support Disaster Declaration for Nine Iowa Counties

Washington, D.C. — Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today sent a letter to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack in support of a
Secretarial Disaster Declaration request submitted by Iowa Governor Terry Branstad for nine Iowa counties. The
declaration would assist Iowa farmers whose crops were impacted by the freezing conditions in early April. Harkin is a
senior member and former chairman of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee.

“The need for assistance to Iowa farmers is substantial,” wrote Harkin. “A secretarial designation would make farmers
eligible to apply for lost income recovery, low-interest loans, and other disaster assistance through the USDA Farm Service
Agency. This assistance would help eligible farmers keep their operations running, ensuring that Iowa’s farmers can
continue to provide delicious apples, ripe tomatoes, sweet corn, and other fresh fruit and produce for families and
communities.”

Harkin is urging Secretary Vilsack to expedite Iowa’s request for a disaster designation and to make available all federal
resources at his disposal to assist farmers in the affected counties.
