Spending Government Dollars Wisely, Not Wastefully
Senator Harkin is committed to ensuring that public funds are spent wisely and that American taxpayers get real value for their investment. To further those goals, Harkin has:
- Established an investigative unit within the Senate HELP Committee, which plays an active role in consumer protection and ensuring that public money is spent wisely. Currently, the unit is investigating whether for-profit education companies, who derive a majority of their profits from taxpayer-funded student loans and grants, are delivering as promised for students.
- Increased funding for efforts to root out waste, fraud and abuse in health care, Social Security and other programs, through his work on the Senate Appropriations Committee.
