Maintaining Modern, Safe Facilities for Kids to Learn
Children cannot be expected to reach their full potential if the school they attend is crumbling around them. In an effort to improve the physical infrastructure of our education system, Senator Harkin has:
- Secured $132.6 million since 1998 for the Harkin School Grants program, which helps Iowa school districts correct fire safety problems and leverage local resources to construct new schools or remodel, modernize existing buildings.
- Provided Iowa colleges and community colleges with the resources to upgrade technology.
- Fought to rebuild the severe damage to Iowa's educational infrastructure due to 2008's storms and flood by making FEMA and Department of Education funds available to reimburse schools for the cost of repairs, and in some cases, razing and building entirely new structures.
