Description: This project would create a moist soil unit on land near the confluence of the Skunk and Mississippi Rivers using dredged material from the Kemps-Craigel dredge cut, which is part of the Rock Island District Regional Dredge Material Management Program. Low lever berms would be created with the dredge material. In addition, funding will support the construction of a water control structure for Spring Creek, which flows through the proposed project area, to pond water to a depth of approximately 18 inches at certain times of the year, creating important habitat.

Center for Advanced Bio-based Binders (CABB)

Description: To continue reasearch and development at CABB. The University of Northern Iowa has developed two new polymers that use environmentally friendly and inexpensive Iowa corn syrup as a raw material to produce binders for sand cores and molds. Polymers produced from corn syrup add as much as four times the value ethanol production does. The new adhesive polymers reduce the emission of hazardous air products and greenhouse gasses by as much as 50 percent when the materials are used.

Converting Agricultural Waste to Energy with Plasma Melting Technology Research and Development

The navigable portions of this river and the locks and dams that allow waterway traffic to move from one pool to another are integral parts of a regional, national, and international transportation network. Recreation facilities include 25 public recreation areas and the Visitor Center located at Lock & Dam 15.

The institute will target training to dislocated workers and other disadvantaged worker populations, and to identify wind energy employers and place students in work-based learning and job opportunities with those firms.
